Badrinath Ki Dulhania rating: ** 1/2
Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the second instalment of romantic comedy 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' with same lead actors and director. The only thing which makes it different from its first movie is that the story deals with socially relevant issues. Here's our review.
STORY
Varun Dhawan as Badrinath Bansal is a Jhansi boy who meets Kota girl Vaideshi Trivedi played by Alia Bhatt at a wedding and then tries to woo her. Vaidehi is a fiercely independent girl while Badri is a tenth pass lad brought up in a male-dominant family, his character will remind you of 90s Govinda. What happens when ambitious girl comes across aimless boy forms the story.
REVIEW
Varun, Alia-starrer flick is a cocktail of social issues and drama. Dowry, feminism, gender issue- the Shashank Khaitan film has it all in just two hours & 19 minutes and still continues to be entertaining. The plot of 'Badrinath Ki Dulhania' is no different, you must have heard such stories in Indian daily soap. The matter of fact is Varun and Alia are the only saving elements of an otherwise weak storyline film. It is Varun-Alia's chemistry and comic moments by Sahil Vaid (hero's best friend) which makes it watchable.
Coming to the acting, Varun is adorable and has successfully portrayed the character of a small town boy, his accent is up to the mark. Alia looks effortless in the role of Vaidehi. Their camaraderie makes them one of the best on-screen jodis of this generation.
You keep smiling throughout this family-drama. There are couple of one liners that are rib-tickling. Small-town setup gives genuine feel to the movie and escalates involvement. But how do Kota girl and Jhansi boy have the same diction?
Audition sequence for choosing bridegroom for (Kritika) Vaidehi's sister was unnecessary. There was also no use of the scene when Somnath draws sketch of boy desired by Kritika. In the second half, Badri'S molestation by gang of muggers and display of plane evacuation by Vaidehi (now an air hostess) also seems to be forced. The movie tries to champion feminism with the scene of heroine giving her duppatta to hero.
The film after interval is sluggish and a bit of Singapore tour. You already know what's going to happen as climax is obvious. Wedding track, disco number, soulful romantic song, sad song- you name it and the movie has it. Music is pleasant and songs are worth humming. Atif Aslam's track 'Humsafar' perfectly blends into the scene and is ear-soothing.
As far as story is concerned, comparing it with 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' will kinda disappoint you but Varun-Alia have successfully carried the legacy. Don't expect any concrete solution or stand on gender issue, just sit down, enjoy and laugh. Extra half star for Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt who have saved people from moving out of the hall with upset faces.
