In the times when we have sequels and reboots in Bollywood, the makers of Baby decided to delve into the risky territory of a spin-off, and came up with Naam Shabana. And more props for making it women-centric. The film, which stars Taapsee Pannu in the lead role will hit the theatres this Friday. However, our film critic Ankita Chaurasia is watching the film at a press show right now and has sent us the first impression of the movie that also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher and Akshay Kumar (who has an extended cameo).
Ankita says, “Naam Shabana has been promoted as the spin-off to action-packed thriller Baby. Hence, it is a given that expectations from the film are sky high. The film begins with a disappointingly foiled mission by an agency. We are then introduced to Shabana (Taapsee Pannu), who is a college student with a rather stoic face and indifference writ large in her attitude. She attends college, trains in martial arts and dines with her mom. Her friend, Jai, is head over heels in love with her but Shabana would rather kick some ass while he drives her around. Over the course of the first half, the reason why she is so is revealed. And while this makes her eccentric for her friends, the agency takes a special interest in her capabilities. A successful mission, where Shabana starts trusting the agency as much as they trust her, she will now be assigned much more gruesome tasks, as is promised by Manoj Bajpayee, just before the lights come back on for intermission. It will be interesting to see what series of events lead Shabana to Nepal, where she met the team in Baby. Let’s see…”
