Dear Zindagi review: Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan take home all the praises for their performances

Dear Zindagi review Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan take home all the praises for their performances

Alia Bhatt’s first film with a Khan has finally released and there has been no one complaining about her role! The actress owns Dear Zindagi solely, as the other men in the film, Shah Rukh Khan, Angad Bedi, Kunal Kapoor, Ali Zafar are there to show support. Our reviewer Sreeju Sudakaran too watched the film and just like many other critics, he too was blown away by the performances delivered by everyone in the film. Being a whole and sole Ali film, without a doubt, the actress has done a spectacular job. Bhatt just keeps going higher and higher with her impeccable talent.

Our reviewer states that the film starts on a very interesting note. But every film goes through that one phase when it either drags on unnecessarily or it just stops moving. Even in DZ, the first half itself goes on a monotonous zone after a while. However, it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s charisma that uplifts the film as it enters the second half. You can read our complete review right here. Basically, Shah Rukh Khan has stolen the thunder from Alia but she’s still got her way out of falling in the superstar’s shadow. Critics have lauded Miss Bhatt’s performance as she once again blows everyone’s minds. However, it was just about the performances that have caught the eyes of the critics. The weak storyline has invited a lot of flak. Sorry about that, Gauri Shinde but critics have claimed that your English Vinglish had more clarity than this one.

Critics review Alia Bhatt

As stated in Firstpost, “Kaira explodes in anger at one point when someone describes her as a pataka (firecracker). Well, that’s precisely what Bhatt is – a pataka with pizzazz and verve. What makes her so impactful is that she has had an internal journey with each of her roles so far, and not so far allowed that journey to be overshadowed by her attractive personality. Bhatt remains in control of that difficult blend throughout.” You can tell by this that the 23 year old actress has once again proved her mettle as an actor as she mesmerises the critics.

It’s not just the words of the said publication but even DNA has divulged extensively about how brilliantly the diva has performed. An excerpt from their review states, “Alia is in superb form as Kaira. She is real and restrained. Her character doesn’t scream, screech, or bawl. And that is much to Gauri’s credit as hers. Her approach towards nursing a broken heart is nonchalance which she relays effectively, and it works.” It’s not just Alia’s performance that has grasped a lot of hullabaloo but of course, superstar Shah Rukh as well! He is quite possibly the life of the film. The kind who makes your knees weak with just one smile of his. Critics review Shah Rukh Khan

SRK, once again takes the limelight with his spectacular performance. What Firstpost right said is, “It is worth mentioning that Khan in this new phase of his career when he is acknowledging his age gracefully, showing us a dash of gray and a whiff of wrinkles, is looking hot.” But it’s not just about him embracing his age and accepting it on silver screen. It also majorly has to do with how well his persona eases the slice of life. Times of India, in just a line, gave a fine review for Shah Rukh by saying, “SRK in his sober-avatar possessing infinite gyaan tempts you to seek out a therapist. If you’re in the mood to do some soul-searching this weekend, this film could do it for you.”

Critics review Gauri Shinde

While the stars of the film take away most of the appreciation, writer Gauri Shinde falls in the pit of bad plotline. The weak story with loose ends has been a big drawback of the film, according to the reviewers. Indian Express, openly states how they are mighty upset with the film’s plot. “‘Dear Zindagi’ should have been a much better film. What we get instead, in spades, is bumper-sticker self-help notes which are strictly boiler-plate.” (ALSO READ: Dear Zindagi box office update: Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt’s film opens to 50 percent occupancy)

However, DNA states that the long drawn conversation patterns are the biggest drawback of the film, “Dear Zindagi suffers from some really long, drawn out monologues and verbal exchanges between Kaira and Dr. Jehangir.” Firstpost thought the film needed more substance and that there were too many loose ends, “Dear Zindagi then is a mixed bag. I loved SRK in the film, Bhatt is always a pleasure to watch, the story visits many themes that are uncommon in Bollywood, and several of the discussions are either witty or insightful or both. Overall though, the film comes across as being not enough because the writing needed more substance.”

As for us at BollywoodLife, our reviewer has said that “Dear Zindagi will definitely appeal to you if you love slice of life film. A little bit of trimming here and there would have been good, and it is not a typical Bollywood movie. However that shouldn’t stop you from not witnessing one of Alia’s best performances and SRK being his charming best.” So what are your plans this weekend? Tell us in the comments section below.
